Generally, I think Parse is finished. I just don't feel the power behind the development team any more. There are still some vital signs, but when I check the trend of related GitHub issues or the number of commits, it seems more like a dying sparrow than a soaring eagle.
Nevertheless, I like Parse. Sometimes I liked Parse better than Firebase. So it was hard to let go of my Parse-supported chat app.
Since I found some free time, I rechecked Parse iOS SDK, especially the Parse Live Query. As it turned out, it's not hard to implement the same application with Parse Server (including Parse Live Query), which we have now with Firebase.
So if for any reason you want or need to maintain your own backend instead of using Firebase, you can have a Parse-Server supported chat solution with absolutely the same functionality that we have with Firebase.
As always, just send me an email for more details.
